It is created especially for the data warehouse or data mart. Surrogate keys are usually integers, generated and managed as part of the extract, transform, load (ETL) process that loads the star schema. The key values have no intrinsic meaning and are not of interest to users of the data warehouse. In each row of the dimension table, the surrogate has a unique value. In the star schema in Figure 3-1, surrogate keys for each dimension table are labeled SK. In this book, surrogate keys will easily be identified by the suffix _key in their column name. Separate and distinct from surrogate keys, one or more natural keys will also be present in most dimension tables. The natural keys are identifiers carried over from source systems. They may not uniquely identify a row in the data warehouse, but they do identify a corresponding entity in the source system. In Figure 3-1, natural key columns are designated NK. Unlike surrogate key values, the values in natural key columns may have meaning to users of the data warehouse. On many different data platforms and RDBMSs, transferring data between systems can be quite a headache. Different database servers store information using various data types and in proprietary structures. Often, transferring information requires exporting information to a standard comma-separated values (CSV) file and then manually importing the information. Microsoft has made the entire process much easier by providing Data Transformation Services (DTS) with SQL Server 7. This architecture allows database designers and administrators to easily transfer information between supported information types. Through various interfaces, DTS supports moving information to and from nonrelational structures, such as Microsoft Excel and Access files, or from other database servers, such as Oracle. The easiest way to transfer information is to use the DTS Export Wizard (see Figure 4-10), which is included with SQL Server. The wizard walks you through the creation of basic packages that transfer data. In addition to performing the important tasks of transferring information between heterogeneous sources, DTS goes one step further in letting you modify data as it is transferred. This is extremely important, because various systems might use different formats for the same information. For example, one database might store the information about a customer s status as Active or Inactive, whereas another might have a true-false setting for a column entitled Active. This can be used for data warehousing (as described later in this chapter) or for moving heterogeneous data into a single, uniform repository. Figure 4-11 shows a sample DTS package that copies data from several sources into a single database server.
