Before the introduction of database management systems, all data permanently stored on a computer system, such as payroll and accounting records, was stored in individual files. A file management system, usually provided by the computer manufacturer as part of the computer's operating system, kept track of the names and locations of the files. The file management system basically had no data model; it knew nothing about the internal contents of files. To the file management system, a file containing a word processing document and a file containing payroll data appeared the same. This chapter will guide you through the process of designing and developing a dimensional model. It is not geared to any single architecture or any single methodology. Instead, it looks at the common tasks required in any design effort, whether conducted as part of an upfront enterprise strategy project or embedded within a subject-area implementation. Dimensional design activity can be grouped into four major tasks: planning the activity, conducting interviews, developing the design, and documenting it. In some cases, an additional prioritization activity is added. These major stages can be applied on different scales, as dictated by the data warehouse architecture. This chapter provides detailed advice on how to break down each task from how to plan the project, to some simple steps for development of the dimensional design itself. Documentation of a dimensional design should always include some essential elements, regardless of its format. This chapter divides design documentation into three major levels, and spells out detailed requirements for each. The first level is a functional declaration of business capability, or requirements. Next, a top-level design includes rigorous definitions of the stars and conformed dimensions that support these requirements. Last, detailed attribute-level documentation identifies the data type and definition of each attribute, as well as its data sources and transformation rules. Checklists are provided for essential information to include in each part of the final documentation.
